Lifeline Canada has begun a new program to train therapy dogs on request from people with mental health issues. It's called Companion PAWS. Companion PAWS is different from our own SHAKE-A-PAW in that Shake-a-Paw teaches youth with mental health issues how to train dogs with the aim of building mutual empathy and occupational skills with the dogs. In SHAKE-A-PAW, the dogs benefit from learning good manners in an adoptive home after they have worked with the youth. The more doggy therapy programs, the better!
